Frequently asked questions

Is Codex Dream Skin safe?
The skin tool uses localhost CDP injection to modify the UI at runtime, without touching the official app bundle or its signature. The upstream project is open source and auditable. That said, it remains a third-party tool—avoid running untrusted local programs while the skin is active, and review the code if security is a concern.
Will it touch my API keys or model settings?
No. Skinning operates entirely at the visual layer and is independent of API configuration. The upstream maintainer has explicitly committed not to read or write API keys, base URLs, or model settings. Your credentials remain untouched.
How do I restore the original look?
The upstream tool provides a built-in one-click restore entry. After restoration, the app will look identical to a fresh official install with no residual changes.
Does it modify the official app files?
No. The skin is injected at runtime and does not alter .app bundles, app.asar archives, or WindowsApps folders. Uninstalling the skin tool leaves no trace in the official installation.
The skin broke after a Codex update. What now?
Official Codex updates may change the DOM structure, breaking existing skins. Try re-running the start script first. If that fails, wait for the upstream project to release a compatible update. Skins we have verified ourselves note the Codex version we tested on their detail page.
Are these images real screenshots?
Images labeled "official concept art" are sourced from the upstream gallery. Those labeled "verified on device" are real screenshots taken by this site, and their detail page notes the Codex version we tested on. Every skin currently in the gallery is concept art from upstream — we are working through real-device verification now.
Can I use my own image as a skin?
Yes. Replace the resource images in the assets folder and restart the skin tool. Make sure you have the rights to use the image—respect copyright and licensing terms.
Is this an official OpenAI product?
No. This is a community open-source project, and this site is also unofficial. The official app offers built-in color and font themes; full-image skinning is currently only available via community solutions.
